Identity Theft Protection getcreditreport

Identity theft is a big problem that is not going away anytime soon. If anything, it will probably get even worse. Identity theft has been described as one of the worst crimes of the twenty-first century but there are some steps you can take to make sure your identity is kept safe.

Identity theft is considered a white collar crime that affected millions of Americans just last year alone. These were just the cases that were reported, there were most likely many more that were not reported. The problem is that most people will not even know their identity has been stolen until it’s too late.

How Identity Theft Affects You

Once you start getting the phone calls from collection agencies and bad reports are being turned in on your credit, it will be very hard to get everything back to normal again. Many people make the mistake of thinking if their identity is stolen all they have to do is make a simple phone call to straighten things out.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. You will have to prove that you are not responsible for the non-payments on your credit history report. It is estimated that it takes the average person that became a victim to identity fraud approximately five to six hundred hours of their time to prove they are not responsible for the negative activity on their credit report. In some extreme cases, you may never completely recover from the rippling effect of identity theft.

Now that you know identity theft is a real problem that can cause you a lot of grief and headaches, the next step is to know how to protect yourself. There are steps that you can take to prevent someone form stealing your identity.

How Can You Protect Yourself

So what can you do to protect yourself from identity theft? Start by making sure all of your personal information is kept secure. Use protection on your personal computer at all time to prevent someone from stealing your personal information this way. Only use sites on the internet that are secured sites.

Whenever you throw away anything containing your personal information, even letters that you receive in the mail, you need to make sure you use a shredder first. If this seems a little extreme, then you need to realize that there are a lot of identity thieves in the world that will physically go through trash in search of someone’s personal information.

Get a credit report at least twice a year. It would be best to send for one from all three of the credit bureaus just to be on the safe side. Go over these reports carefully and if you find anything that does not look right, find out why it is on your credit report and if it is not legitimate, start working on getting off your record right away.

Identity theft has become such a problem that you now have the option of hiring a professional service to help protect you. When choosing a professional you want to search for a service that guarantees they will be there to help you sort things out in the event your identity is stolen.

Whichever option you decide to use it is important that you stay on top of things. Make sure you always take every precaution possible to protect your identity. As soon as you find something that does not look right, start asking questions. Even if it is a small item that you do not recognize. If your identity has been stolen they may start out small and then wipe you out fast if it is not caught.

Undoing the damage that has been done once your identity has been stolen is even harder than preventing it in the first place. Therefore, it is wise to take every precaution possible to make sure your personal information is protected at all times.
