Fixing Errors on Your Credit Report getcreditreport

Now that more people are becoming aware of the fact that it is important to check your credit report on a regular basis, they are also learning that mistakes often occur. When you request your free credit report every year (which you are entitled to by law) you can check for errors.

Errors sometimes occur because the three big credit reporting agencies- Experian, Equifax and TransUnion - have an incredibly large amount of data to deal with on a regular basis. Anytime you are dealing with this much data, it is expected that there could be a problem here and there. Additionally, problems occur if you are a victim of identity theft. If someone is using your credit for their own spending, you must take control and stop the problem as quickly as possible. This is why regular monitoring of your credit report is essential.

So how can you go about fixing errors on your credit report? What steps do you need to take? Your first step is of course to view your credit report and identify the mistakes. Once you have done this, prepare yourself for a legal state of mind. Some people never realize there is a mistake in their credit until they are denied for a line of credit of some sort. It is your responsibility as a consumer to stay up to date on what your credit report says about you.

Remember that it is generally understood that what the credit report says is true so if you wish to dispute it, there could be a tough road ahead of you. From the first moment you discover a problem in your report, you should begin taking notes and getting the facts. Every action you take should be with the intention of convincing a judge (should it come to that). Keep detailed records and take notes of every detail, every letter, every phone conversation and any other details that may pertain to this case.

Remember to remain professional at all times and with anyone who you speak to. It may be tempting to scream and yell or get irate regarding this serious mistake on your credit report but being unprofessional will only come back to haunt you when you try to have the mistake removed.

Here are some more tips for fixing errors on your credit report:

  • Always send a certified letter- making a phone call may be easier but the letter is official and can be proven later if needed
  • Never address a letter "to whom it may concern"- always find out the name and title of the person you are contacting when sending a letter
  • Know who to contact. When trying to fix a problem on your credit report, many people go straight to the creditor. This isn't always the position you should take. It is usually best to contact the credit reporting agency first to report the mistake.
  • Document and get proof whenever possible. Keep accurate notes of anything pertaining to your case and whenever possible to get proof of the mistake, always do so.

When trying to fix errors on your credit report, remember to be patient. If you don't see results immediately, take your time but be persistent and keep trying until you get the action you want to see.
